About Madrid

Madrid first achieved Bird Friendly City status in 2020.
The Madrid community is friendly to birds in a variety of ways. Its woodlands provide extensive habitat, reaching the Des Moines River corridor. It also is connected through the High Trestle Trail corridor, which helps make this community a birding destination. Madrid hosts 109 nesting bird species, of which 34 are Species of Greatest Conservation Need. It has several public parks, including Dalander Park, which is being developed as a Bird Friendly Park - with help from Iowa State University’s Landscape Architecture Department.
