About Ames

Ames first achieved Bird Friendly City status in 2020.

The Ames community values our natural resources, incorporates environmentally-conscious designs into our infrastructure improvement projects, has a comprehensive post-construction stormwater management ordinance, educates citizens through our Smart Watersheds program, and boasts 36 parks throughout the community. All of these contribute to natural habitat and bird friendly environments where 302 species of birds have been documented within the city limits of Ames. Our watersheds include Worle Creek, College Creek, Onion Creek, Clear Creek, Ioway Creek and South Skunk River where we are continuing to enhance riparian buffers using native vegetation. Bird friendly community partners are also key to conservation and wildlife projects in Story County.
